The mushroom is often called a red mushroom because of the color of the cap. It can also be brown-red, yellow-red or red-brown. Its shape is hemispherical, with a slightly velvety surface. In a young mushroom, the underside of the cap is white, in a more mature one, it is gray. It has a tall leg (up to 15 cm), covered with a network of gray scales. The flesh is white, quickly turns blue when broken, and may even turn black later, but this does not affect the taste. Thistles grow mainly under aspen trees, as well as in forests mixed with aspen. Fruiting lasts from the end of June to the end of September.
